Choosing between batteries and grid-tied systems should be an easy decision. There are a few pro's and many con's to batteries.

Battery Pro's
Battery Con's

Constant power for special needs such as:

  • Life support equipment
  • Computer Server
  • Off grid projects

  • Substantial Additional Expense
  • Minimal Rebate
  • Limited Lifecycle
  • Additional Maintenance
  • Additional Equipment
    Charge Controller, & Monitors
  • Limits you to Low Voltage System
  • Additional Knowledge Required of Owner
  • Additional Space Required
  • Potential Exposure to Toxic Chemicals

Our conclusion is: If you need life support or a server on your property, go with batteries, otherwise use a direct grid-tie system.

In a grid-tie system, the grid acts as the battery. Excess electricity produced in the daylight turns your meter backwards as it feeds out to the grid. At night your meter turns forward as you use the electricity from the grid. Due to seasonal fluctuations of sunshine, the utility company uses a net metering system. Net metering is simply an annual billing cycle rather than monthly. A perfect system would leave your meter at zero each year.
